Abstract

Islam in society nowadays has evolved over a very long lime, especially as the span of time betweenthe messenger, the Prophet Muhammad, becomes more distant. This religion which reaches the disciples'heart faces many, various considerations. One o f these considerations which is mostly accepted by thesociety is secularity towards the religion. Religion is considered to be the other side o f a person's life, whichis not supposed to be involved in societal matters. Hoioever, at the same time, a phenomenon of "back tosyariah (Islamic law)" becomes apparent in Moslem society. A proportion o f Islamic disciples rediscover aconnection and realise its jwtential in ruling human life. I he Koran becomes a solution in confronting thislife.It affects not only common people's thoughts but also artists in creating artworks. Vie late AhmadSadali was a Moslem artist who realized this potential in his life. He tried to identify himself as "idilalbab", a human being exemplified by his Cod, as written in the Holy Book in which he believed. Abstract

work o f art .is. in essence, a language in its visual form. It is the visualisation o f the jtersonalexpression o f an artist. Nowadays, a work o f art not merely possesses a practical function but also becomcsan expressive work in a two or three-dimensional format. Therefore, it can be considered as a text containingcertain meanings and messages which can be analysed, for example, using a semiotics approach. Thisanalysis can be carried out since there is a seiniotic proccss involving the signs within a work o f art.Roland Barthes presents a theory o f mythical analysis in his semiotics approach which is called"the order seiniological system. " It consists o f two levels, i.e. language as the first order semiological system,and myth as the second. The first level is a denotation level. A work o f art - as an image - possesses an iconicmessage. An explanation at this level gives meaning to the literal or the non-coded iconic message whichcan be seen from indicators o f observable reality. The second level (level o f connotation) is the reading o f thesymbolic message, -which is based on a certain cultural code or familiarity towards a particular stereotype.In this case, an image or artwork with such a connotation signifies an ideology, while that being signifiedis called rhetoric or cannot at or.Works to be analysed are /DM. Mekomatia's “Dikejar Waktu" and Uliana Iraw.vii's "Tak AdaBatas." These are examples o f images which possess iconic messages: literal/denotative as well as symbolic.In addition, they also contain a contextual "text" (the title o f the work). The structure is able to be usedas a reference in giving meaning or reading a urork o f art, denotatively and connotatively as well. Tnecommunicative relationship behoeen the existing iconic messages guides a person in giving it meaning.Keywords: art, semiotics, mythical theory

Abstract

Discourses and developments o f art craft itr Indonesia arc always interesting to be discussed.Discourses on the term of "seni kriya" are, in fact, inseparable from the similar one, i.e. "kriya ". The term"seni kriya" and "kriya", indeed, possess different cultural background. When an artist creates a worko f art craft, he/she does not concern about these discourses. On the contrary, in an academic level, thesediscourses can sometimes become a problem, especially when it comes to giving the meaning of art craft.This article attempts to discuss those problems. At first, there will be a description about the origino f the term “seni kriya", in addition to the explanation on the term "kriya ". Liter, the present conditiono f art craft discourses will be presented. Abstract

W1ien an audience observes a picture or photograph, the resulting opinions might be varied, suchas that a picture is good or interesting; there is an emotional bond with a picture; a photograph conveysmemory, it has a story or a specific message. Basically, photography is a communicative medium since aphoto possesses a communicative value when it is used to deliver a message, or when it is an idea expressedto an audience so that there will be a similar understanding «> /0 its meaning When the “expressiono f the photo" is not clcar, not only its meaning but also its objective as well as the message it deliverswould be unclear - which means the communicative process does not work as it is supposed to. In orderto effectively express a message through a photo, in addition to obtaining a go a l idea, an appropriateand contextual "structure of photographic language' should be applied. This "structure o f photographiclanguage" includes the application o f technique, lighting and appropriate composition (aesthetics)In addition to possessing and mastering the above skills, it is necessary for a photographer to beaware o f undertaking research before conducting a photography session. Conducting research provides boththe photographer and also others interested in the photo with several advantages. It not only enables aphotographer to obtain good, interesting and beautiful photos, but the photo session will also be more effectiveand efficient because of this research. No matter how simple is the reason for conducting a photographysession; research should be earned out. Conducting research for photography - fo r aspects o f idea, techniqueas well as aesthetics - can encompass the problem o f identification, analysis, and developing a conclusionprior to the execution o f the photography session.Keywords: photography, photographer, research

Abstract

This article discusses the development o f rustic craps nowadays. Rustic craft in this articlemeans a work o f craft that is "made'' o f natural materials, such as roots, and ru ral-folk-crafts, fo r example,"lesutig" and "luku " (plough). These kinds o f crafts are becoming popular among the middle-to-high classcommunities in the cities. The crafts function ils a signifier in gaining social status which differentiate c,certain class with other classes, and also fulfil their needs o f a different life style and their aesthetkal value.Such a condition increases a valorization o f rustic craft in economical and symbolic sense, but, at the sametime, creates an ironic condition especially in the context o f sccio-cultural shifting in a rural area. Thevillagers, especially the farmers, are withdrawn from their socio cultural base since they become unfamiliarwith their fvlk-funitiunul-crufts.Key ivords: life style, craft, rustic craft, discourse, valorization.
